When Parenting Looks Different: Embracing Neurodiversity & Big Feelings
Presenter: Erica Rozmid, Ph.D., ABPP
When parents picture family planning, many often imagine a future that may not align with the reality of raising a neurodivergent child. This presentation explores how parents can shift from “what we expected” to “who they are” by embracing their child’s strengths, sensitivities, and emotional challenges. Using a DBT-C (Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Children) framework, parents will learn why emotional dysregulation happens, how to respond with validation instead of escalation, how to practice radical acceptance in daily interactions, and how to foster connection even in moments of chaos. Parents will also leave with practical behavioral tools they can use right away, along with a deeper understanding of their child and their inner world.
