Hi! My name is Kalpana Sarathy and I am an 8th grade classroom teacher at Park Century School. This year marks my 10th year anniversary of working at PCS. The kids who have come in and out my doors have all been unique and will forever be remembered. I feel so lucky to be able to work with teenagers every day. I love the energy they bring into the classroom each day. On a personal note, I have been married to my husband, Prakash, for 19 wonderful years. I am a proud mother of two. My son, Anand, is 17 years old and my daughter Kavita is 14 years old and both are students at Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach. Other than Los Angeles, home for me is Waterloo, Ontario, Canada where my parents live. My two older sisters, Rohini and Anita, live near my parents. I love sports, my favorites being hockey, football and soccer. In my quiet moments, I love to read on my iPad and write stories.
8th Graders Week of November 9 Through 11
This week has been pretty good for the 8th graders. This is because of a few things. First, the 7/8th grade flag football team won their playoff game, which was exciting. We also had a day off on Wednesday which was nice because we could sleep in. Lastly, the all school choir started practicing in the music room with Paul which was fun. In our subjects, the 8th grade continued learning about the brain with Nora. We are also continuing to learn about colonial history and the thirteen colonies in Kalpana’s history class.. In art we are working on our climate change posters which are gradually becoming pieces of art. For media with David we have started the building stage of the “Finding a Need Project”. In science we have begun a unit on programming and robotics. Last but not least, in P.E we are wrapping up wallball. All in all, this week has been a good one.
News Update from the Eighth Grade
The eighth grade class has been extremely busy for the past couple of weeks. Nora, Kalpana, LaVerne, and Kyle have been encouraging us students to work together as a group. Our first group lesson has been to plan a Rock n’ Roll tour for the Rolling Stones or Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. This project has pushed us to work at a higher level and as a group. We have to plan a thirty two day tour, which tests our math, planning, and organizational skills. We have also started our art class and are discussing the use of lines in art to further the story or the mood of the picture. In P.E., our class is playing basketball while building teamwork skills and good sportsmanship. In music we are finishing our ukuleles, which we will use in the 2nd Annual Holiday Concert. Our class has also started science and media. In science, we are learning about the layers of the atmosphere; and in media we are beginning to learn about the design process on the iPad. Everyone in the eighth grade is ecstatic to start our final year at Park Century School!
