The Shaywitzes’ presentation will explore the unexpected nature of dyslexia and the benefits of a specialized school and introduce the Shaywitz DyslexiaScreenTM (SDS, Pearson, 2016), a new instrument created by Sally Shaywitz and used by teachers to efficiently and reliably screen kindergarteners, first graders, and second graders for dyslexia.
Featured in a recent edition of the New York Times for their expertise and dedication to dyslexia research, Sally E. Shaywitz, M.D. and Bennett A. Shaywitz, M.D., Co-Founders and Co-Directors of the Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity, carry out cutting-edge research to advance the science of dyslexia while also devoting themselves to caring for children and adults who are dyslexic. Recently-named recipients of the 2019 Genius Award from Liberty Science Center, the Shaywitzes have authored over 350 scientific articles and works combined, including Sally Shaywitz’s award-winning must-read book Overcoming Dyslexia (Alfred Knopf, 2003, Vintage, 2005), which details fundamental scientific findings on dyslexia and how to translate this scientific knowledge into policy and clinical practice.  Additionally, the Shaywitz DyslexiaScreenTM (SDS, Pearson), released in 2016, provides a tool for teachers to efficiently and reliably screen kindergarteners and first graders for dyslexia. The extensive Shaywitz studies provide the basic framework and details for the 21st century scientific understanding of dyslexia.
