Lower School Program (Grades 2-5)

When students walk into the PCS art studio, they can pick from a number of different art centers to bring their ideas to life. The foundational art centers that are open most of the year are Drawing, Painting, Collage, and Sculpture. Once students have demonstrated that they can work independently in the foundational art centers, more centers are made available to them, such as Fiber Arts (sewing), Printmaking, Stop Motion Animation, and Jewelry Making. Each class starts with a 5 to 10 minute lesson, which can take the form of a skills demonstration, an art history lesson, or a gallery walk where students share and talk about their works in progress. Once students are working in their centers, they are able to meet with the teacher one-on-one or in small groups to brainstorm, troubleshoot ideas, or get additional support.
